PROJECT PROPOSAL

1. One sentence summary of project (to be used for our data summary)

Interactive science presentation that enhance 3rd grade curriculum on electricity.

2. Brief description of entire project, including parts not funded by this grant

As part of OMSI’s outreach program, an OMSI staff member conducts this module. The event includes interactive experiments with a Van DeGraff generator and a variety of equipment. Students also observe the power of superconductors and learn key concepts of electricity generation and transmission as well as safety.

3. How will students be actively involved?

Students are naturally very curious about electricity. In this event the students create their own electrical circuits and observe results both through their senses (e.g. sound and light) and using measurement equipment (e.g. meters).

4. How will this grant expand or enhance your curriculum or one of the Foundations target areas?

This is very consistent with the foundation’s goal to fund projects that enhance basic curriculum in the target area of science. It will also provide students exposure to OMSI, which is a wonderful resource in our region.

5. Who will be involved (teachers, students, parents, etc.)? How many Students will this impact?

The program takes one hour and is limited to 30 students per class. There are 12 3rdt grade classes across the district. If we estimate an average of 25 students per class this grant will cover roughly 300 students, 12 teachers, and 12 parent volunteers. (Note: I’m including the mixed 2nd/3rd grade classes at Fox and LaCamas in this total.)

OMSI charges $100 per class. The total cost is estimated at: 4 3rd grade classes at Helen Baller ($400), 4 at Dorothy Fox ($400), and 4 at LaCamas Heights ($400) which adds to $1200.

Classroom volunteers are encouraged to attend as long as the 30-person limit isn’t exceeded.

When and where will this project take place?

These events take place during school hours on campus. Each campus would have the program for one day. A classroom, library, or music room space will need to be dedicated for housing the materials and eliminating the need to do multiple set-ups of the materials. Each class would spend an hour with the presenter and the materials.

7. TIMELINE: What specific steps will mark your progress and roughly when do you expect to accomplish each?

The most time and cost efficient way to accomplish these events would be to have each school schedule a single day for all the 3rd grade classes on campus.

Helen Baller One day – school chooses date

Dorothy Fox One day – school chooses date

LaCamas Heights One day – school chooses date

8. Please specify method (if any) of measuring success of project.

OMSI uses an evaluation form to measure student comprehension out after each class. The results are communicated back to the teacher and are used by OMSI management to continually improve their presentations.
